State University of West Georgia
Challenge
Professor Sumner was looking for creative ways to use online resources and make himself more accessible to the students of his World Civilization classes. On campus just two days a week, he wanted to make sure he could meet the needs of his 170 students any day, regardless of where he was. Even when he was on campus, high enrollment made it hard to make the personal connections that are essential to his teaching style.
Solution
It was one of his students who suggested that he build his own Web site. After comparing all the available options, the student started up a site at Homestead. When it came time for Professor Sumner to take over development of the site, he was pleased and surprised at how easy it was. Over time, the site grew to include a syllabus, reading assignments, review terms, lecture notes, as well as numerous pictures, illustrations, maps and links.
Success
The site has had enormous benefits for Professor Sumner. He has seen increased enthusiasm among his students, and test scores have gone up accordingly. He can hold virtual 'office hours' from his rural home and other remote locations. Since most of his primary sources are now available online, his students save money by no longer having to purchase document readers. The site has caught the attention of colleagues and other professionals in the field of World History. To date, the site has received more than 20,000 hits, many from overseas, giving this dedicated World History teacher a truly global reach.
"I sing the praises of Homestead everywhere I go. You have given me a tool that has made my life considerably easier and enriched the education of my students and that is the goal of any dedicated educator."
Robert Sumner
