Challenge
Don Green had a vision to build a classroom around a Web site. Recruited to teach 4th grade from his position as a technology instructor, Don saw the potential of the Internet in education. Once he had a classroom of his own, Don imagined countless ways that a Web site could enhance his curriculum. He already knew some HTML, but not enough to accomplish what he had in mind. So, he decided to take an HTML class.
Solution
With his technology background, Don had no trouble in class, but he could already see that building pages with HTML would demand more time than his busy teaching schedule would allow. He began to wonder about other options. During one class session, he did a quick Internet search and discovered Homestead. As soon as he saw how flexible and easy it was to use, he was hooked.
Success
He has never stopped using Homestead since. Don has developed an entire course on how to integrate Homestead Web sites into classroom practice. He uses his own classroom as a case study. His students' writing skills have improved with the knowledge that their published work is accessible to the whole world. He has also made use of the Web Poll and Weather Elements to enhance his math and science curriculum. Many of his classroom jobs revolve around the site, from "Reporters" going out to other classrooms to invite online participation, to Web masters and Quality control. Even the bulletin boards reflect the activities at his site.
"The site is the center of everything in my classroom. I used to give workshops on PowerPoint and other multimedia, but now the teachers are mostly requesting classes on how to use Homestead. At the end, I always have a little crowd of people ready to sign up!"
